What you are setting up

A comment-to-DM automation listens for a supported comment on a selected Instagram post or Reel. When the comment matches the keyword you configured, Replyrr asks Instagram to send the commenter the private reply you prepared. The person starts the interaction publicly; the useful next step arrives privately.

If you want the product-level overview first, read the Instagram comment-to-DM automation page. The deeper mechanics guide explains webhooks, matching, private replies, and the limits Meta controls.

02

Prepare the campaign before opening the builder

The automation is only the delivery layer. Decide what the person is asking for and where that request should end before you configure the trigger. A clear destination prevents vague copy and makes testing objective.

  • An eligible Instagram professional account: Business or Creator.
  • A published post or Reel with a specific call to action.
  • One short keyword people can read, remember, and type correctly.
  • The final link, file, product page, booking page, menu, or answer.
  • A test account that is not the connected account, so you can exercise the audience path.

Open every destination on a phone before using it. A fast private reply cannot rescue a broken download, an expired calendar, or a product page that does not match the post.

03

Set up the automation step by step

  1. STEP 01

Connect Instagram through the official login flow

Authorize the eligible Business or Creator account through Instagram Login. Replyrr should not need your Instagram password or a copied browser session.

  2. STEP 02

Choose the campaign post or Reel

Select the content that makes the offer. Keep the first automation scoped to that campaign so an old or unrelated comment cannot receive the new reply.

  3. STEP 03

    Choose one keyword

Use the word the caption already promises, such as guide, link, menu, price, or book. Avoid two different words for the same call to action until the basic rule has been tested.

  4. STEP 04

    Write the private reply

Name what you are sending, provide the next step, and keep the message understandable if the person reads it later without the original post in view.

  5. STEP 05

    Add the maintained destination

Use the current link or configured file. When facts change frequently, send people to the page your team already maintains instead of copying those facts into every automation.

  6. STEP 06

    Publish the rule

Review the selected account, content, keyword, and reply together. Turn the rule on only when all four describe the same campaign.

  7. STEP 07

    Run an end-to-end test

Comment the keyword from another eligible account, confirm the correct private reply arrives, open the destination on mobile, and check the delivery record in Replyrr.

04

Write the caption and DM as one promise

The strongest copy states the exchange before the person comments. The caption names the keyword and outcome; the DM confirms the same outcome and supplies it. Do not make people guess what will happen next.

A simple comment-to-DM copy pattern

Use sentence case and normal punctuation in the final campaign even if the keyword appears in capitals for visibility. The reply should sound like a useful handoff, not a surprise sales pitch.

05

Use this pre-launch test checklist

  1. Confirm the connected Instagram account is the account that published the selected content.
  2. Read the caption and DM back to back; the same keyword and outcome should appear in both.
  3. Submit the intended keyword from another account and verify the correct automation handles it.
  4. Open every link or file from the received DM on a phone.
  5. Try an unrelated comment and confirm it does not receive the campaign reply.
  6. Review the send result in Replyrr, then watch the first real comments after launch.
06

Troubleshoot the workflow in the right order

Check the account and content first

Confirm that the automation belongs to the connected account and the intended post or Reel. A correct keyword attached to the wrong content is still the wrong rule.

Check the keyword and competing rules

Compare the test comment with the configured keyword and inspect other active automations that may cover the same content or intent. Keep the test literal before adding more variations.

Check the delivery result

Use Replyrr’s delivery record to distinguish a rule that never matched from a request that Meta did not accept. If the connection has expired or a permission changed, reconnect through the official authorization flow rather than repeatedly changing campaign copy.

Check the destination separately

If the DM arrives but the next step fails, the automation worked and the destination did not. Repair the link, access settings, or mobile page, then retest the whole path.

07

Build the next workflow only after the first one works

Once the first comment-to-DM path is reliable, reuse the operating pattern for another high-intent request. Keep each campaign’s content, keyword, reply, and destination explicit.

Use the next practical guide to send a guide from Instagram comments, or adapt the same setup for creators in the creator automation playbook. Review Instagram automation safety before expanding the rule, and check current plan allowances before a larger campaign.
